THINK OBJECTIVELY ABOUT INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT

CERTAIN MIS INFORMATION / MISGIVINGS TRIED TO BE CORRECTED. IT IS FOR YOU TO DECIDE
1.It is said that 48% of tax collected goes for tax administration. In which world are you living ? If Rs.3.50 lakh crores is collected by IT department in a year, do you mean to say that 1.8 lakh crores is spent by IT department. For your kind information, 0.54% (little more than half percent) is the cost of collection of taxes by IT department. Check the official figures before giving such a blatantly false information.
2.Regarding lowering of tax rates, please compare the rates in developed countries. Now, we can boast of nearly competing with them and the rates are far more reasonable than in some countries. Do you think that 33% of taxes (on the net income after expenses) is very high, when we have a strong parallel economy and plenty of sound tax planning devices.
3.The steep increase in tax collections should be kept in mind which sufficiently indicate that the lowering of tax rates has really yielded results.
3. Also check out as to how much you would have paid as taxes, if the rates applicable 5 years ago is to be applied now.
4.There was never a necessity of proving existence for the dept. The dept is there as a deterrent only. As regards pruning the size - the work force to tackle the large number of tax payers is grossly inadequate. The increase in the number of tax payers is about five fold and the present staff strength is nearly remained 80% of the orginal strength. In spite of huge computerisation, the need for technically sound and young officials is always felt very badly.
6.The department is one of the most efficiently managed among CG departments and in fact, it is many a times, "neighbours envy" for the kind of technical infrastructure provided to its staff. I dont think any thing is spent on decorative/unrelated activities.
You can think objectively, only IF YOU ARE NOT HAVING A PREJUDICED / BIASSED MIND.

Very similar to the police, IT dept is viewed as a "never-get-into-an-imbroglio-with-them" kind of dept. So a friendly attitude towards the taxpayer might bridge the gap between the taxpayer and the IT dept. The other side of the story is the sheer ignorance about income tax and the IT dept. makes the common feel a distance, and keep the IT dept at an arm's distance and remember it only in March/July/Dec. Regular interaction between people and the IT dept might also get the objectivity.
