BATCH FLOWER REMEDIES – a simple but effective healing method

 1.           From time immemorial, we know that the nature has placed divinely enriched herbs, plants and trees as a providential means for prevention and cure of disease.  Our own Ayurveda and Siddha Medicines are the glorified examples of this fact.   It is on the similar principles, the power to heal all types of illness and suffering is explored by Dr. Bach through the most sensitive and fertile part of a plant, which is its “Flower”.

 2.           The mind being the most delicate and sensitive part of the body, clearly shows the onset and course of a disease, much more definitely and immediately than the body, even before its onset at a physiological level.  One way of treating a disease is to work from physiology which is equally complicated as we do not really understand as to why the same has different effects and manifestations on different people; and hence the effect is what need treatment, because they guide to the real cause.

3.           In illness there is a change of mood from that in ordinary life, and those who are observant can notice this change often before and sometimes long before, the disease appears, and by treatment we can prevent the malady appearing. When illness has been present for some time, again the mood of the sufferer will guide to the correct remedy.  Therefore, in illness and even before its occurrence at body level, these remedies can work if we are observant enough.

4.           Dr. Edward Bach studied medicine first in Birmingham and later at the University College Hospital, London, where he was House Surgeon. As a bacteriologist and pathologist he undertook original research into vaccines in his own research laboratory.

5.           In 1917, while treating the soldiers who returned injured from France, he collapsed and was rushed into an operating theatre suffering from a severe haemorrhage. He was operated to remove a tumour, but the prognosis was poor. Bach was told that he had only three months to live.

 6.           As soon as he could get out of bed, Bach returned to his laboratory. He intended to advance his work as far as he could in the short time that remained. The three months came and went and found him in better health than ever. Now, he was convinced that his sense of purpose was what saved him: he still had work to do.

7.           Dr Bach’s  research into vaccines was going well, but despite this he felt dissatisfied with the way doctors were expected to concentrate on diseases and ignore the whole person. He aspired for a more holistic approach to medicine and perhaps this explains why, not being a homoeopath, he later took the offer of a post at  the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital.

8.           He soon noticed the parallels between his work on vaccines and the principles of homoeopathy. He adapted his vaccines to produce a series of seven homoeopathic nosodes. This work and its subsequent publication brought him some fame in homoeopathic circles. People began to refer to him as 'the second Hahnemann'.

9.           Till now, Dr. Bach was working with bacteria, but wanted to find remedies that would be purer and less reliant on the products of disease. He began collecting plants and in particular flowers - the most highly-developed part of a plant - in the hope of replacing the nosodes with a series of gentler remedies.

10.        By 1930 he was so enthused by the direction his work was taking that he gave up his lucrative practice and left London, determined to devote the rest of his life to the new system of medicine that he was sure could be found in nature. Over years of trial and error, which involved preparing and testing thousands of plants, he found one by one the remedies he wanted. Each was aimed at a particular mental state or emotion. He found that when he treated the personalities and feelings of his patients, their unhappiness and physical distress would alleviate naturally as the healing potential in their bodies was unblocked and allowed to work better.

The principle behind Bach Flower remedies:

11.        Dr. Bach was a pioneer in understanding the relationship of emotions to the health of the body and psyche. He understood that to create health, the emotional and spiritual aspects of our being must be addressed. Ill health results when we lack an awareness of our soul-spiritual identity, and when we are alienated from others or disconnected from our purpose in life.

12.        As Bach explained in his landmark treatise Heal Thyself, disease is a message to change; an opportunity to become aware of our shortcomings and to learn the lessons of life experience so that we may better fulfil our true destiny.

13.        The remedies invoke healing quest by awakening the innate capacities of our soul, and enhance health on all levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual. They do this not by suppressing symptoms, nor by altering our biochemistry, but rather by acting as catalysts to strengthen our conscious healing process.

14.        This journey is a quest for wholeness, founded on the understanding that illness is a wakeup call from our soul, demanding self-discovery and sensitivity to others and to the world around us. Most of all, it requires that we change our inner attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions.  It is here that flower essences can offer their unique contribution, no matter what other therapies we are using. By rousing our awareness, the remedies provide an additional stimulus to help us past our denial and resistance.

15.        Therefore, while flower essences combine with and support many other health modalities, they have their own unique message to share with us. Like true friends, they challenge us to self awareness and change, but ultimately leave the choice to us whether we seize the opportunity and heed the call of nature towards positive change and transformation.

16.        Bach flower remedies are the easiest way to treat and it can even work on pets.  There are only 38 remedies for specific and identifiable mental emotions and also there’s a rescue remedy for emergencies caused due to sudden distress or shock.  The Remedies are also prescribed as a combination depending on the multiple emotional state of the patient and they are safest to take along with any other medication since they do not interfere with the process of healing in a holistic manner.
